Parent Education Meetings

Parents and teaching professionals meet on an ongoing basis to identify areas of strength, areas of needed growth, and develop an action plan and timeline to monitor change and progress. Throughout the year we also hold evening information sessions at our centre for parents to learn about supporting their children in listening and spoken language acquisition from professionals and fellow parents.

IFSPs and IEPs

Parents play an active role in creating their child's Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP). These plans outline family goals designed to help your child reach their full listening and spoken language potential.
Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) are conducted twice a year for all children starting in our Early Learning Program. IEPs identify comprehensive goals in audition (hearing), repetitive and expressive language, speech, cognition, and social pragmatics. IEPs are used to evaluate your child’s progress and are completed by the child’s education professional and in consultation with other staff.
Parents are integral to the development of their child’s learning journey. They are key partners in identifying and writing annual goals, as well as monitoring them throughout the year. As parents, the more you understand about your child’s skills and needs, the more effective you will be as advocates throughout your child’s educational journey.

Transitional Support 

In person sessions are held towards the end of the school year for families transitioning from one program to another for the following September. Whether the student is moving programs within our organization, or transitioning into the mainstream education system, our professional staff work with families to make the transition as smooth as possible.

During transitional information sessions parents will be informed about the process, get to meet the professional staff in the program they are transition to (if it is within our organization) and have their questions and concerns addressed.

For families transitioning into mainstream schooling specifically, our professional staff provide timely information to the educational staff at the child's new school that includes the students’ history, education plans and goals, and any accommodations the student requires to ensure that their listening and spoken language needs are being addressed.

Translation Services 


Children’s Hearing and Speech Centre of BC is a multicultural education facility. We are very proud of our diversity as it allows us to present a rich cultural experience to our students, exposing them to different ideas, cultures, food, and play. This better prepares them for mainstream schooling and the greater multi-cultural community.

We serve multiple families whose first language is not English. Languages include, but are not limited to: Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, Gujarati and Kurdish. When families can communicate in their own language, they are able to ask questions, share ideas, and collaborate with their child’s team of experts. Our Centre is committed to ensuring that all families have access to communication in their own language by utilizing Interpreters to translate verbal and sometimes written communication in order to help support their child’s development and learning. This service is integrated into every program we offer.

In the 2018/2019 calendar year we provided over 100 hours of Translation Services. Whether it is their initial visit, meeting with our audiologist or occupational therapist, discussions with their First Words or preschool teacher, and any other specialist or service provider, we want parents to have full access to information uninhibited by language barriers. This ensures that every child has the best chance of learning with the full support of their family at home.
